UAVs are becoming a pillar in defense strategy and digital transformation for civil applications, and are being applied widely with a strong growth trajectory in the future. UAV applications range from military operations to agriculture, meteorology, and media.
In Vietnam, on May 28, 2025, the National Innovation Center (NIC) announced the establishment of three innovation and strategic technology expert networks, including the “the Aerospace, Space, and Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) Technology Network”. This demonstrates Vietnam’s strong interest in mastering UAV-related technologies to adapt to the modern global context.
Besides scientific and technological capacity and professional expertise, UAV design and development requires supporting tools, focusing on software solutions for design, simulation, and performance analysis of aerodynamics (CFD), thermal, and acoustic noise aspects. These solutions play a key role in increasing reliability and reducing design cycle time.
Below is a comprehensive technological solution package for UAV research, design, and development. The package includes building a comprehensive digital twin of products, a performance twin, and a manufacturing system twin.
The solution package includes the following functions:
- Conceptual design and detailed mechanical design with NX: includes tools for concept design, aerodynamic styling design, and structural component design. NX also integrates with Capital for electrical system design and with Xpedition for electronic system design. With MCAD/ECAD synchronization and integrated data management, UAV design collaboration across disciplines is seamless.
- Electrical system design with Capital: supports electrical schematic design, including wiring harnesses integrated with NX for 3D electrical routing.
- UAV performance analysis with Simcenter Porfolio: includes CFD analysis (Simcenter StarCCM+ and Simcenter FloEFD), thermal analysis, and acoustic analysis with Simcenter Acoustic, combined with design space exploration and optimization with Simcenter HEED, and system-level simulation with Simcenter Amesim. Aerodynamic analysis is particularly important for UAVs, enabling evaluation of balance, drag, flight speed, and stability under different operating conditions. Analysts can use standalone simulation software or integrated NX CAD environments for fast, convenient, and accessible simulation.
- Electronic control systems and IC design with Siemens EDA (Mentor Graphics): Beyond mechanical and structural design, mastering electronic control systems is critical, serving as the “brain” of UAVs. Secure and reliable control system design ensures safety. Siemens EDA provides a complete suite of tools from system design (EBS), performance analysis, to IC design for UAV control.
- Product lifecycle management and collaboration with Teamcenter: PLM enhances multi-disciplinary collaboration, manages data throughout the product development lifecycle, enables efficient data reuse, and digitizes workflows such as design approval and engineering change processes. It also integrates manufacturing management.
- Digitalization of manufacturing systems with Tecnomatix and Opcenter: provides a platform for modeling production systems, simulating production scenarios, and optimizing processes. The solution also includes Opcenter MES for managing and executing mass production operations.
