What stage is Windows 11 26H2 at?

On August 27, 2026, Microsoft released Windows 11, version 26H2, to the Release Preview Channel with build 26300.9278. The announcement makes the version available for early testing ahead of its broader release in 2026; it does not mark general availability for all users.

Businesses should use the preview period to answer a practical question: do the applications that support their daily work run reliably on the new version? Test results will help IT teams determine the upgrade sequence and estimate the time needed for user support.

Upgrading through an enablement package on a shared platform

Windows 11 26H2 shares the same servicing branch as 24H2 and 25H2. With this approach, Microsoft uses an enablement package to move eligible devices to the new version. Some of the required code has already been delivered to devices through earlier cumulative updates.

Instead of replacing the entire operating system in a major update, the enablement package activates the relevant components and changes the Windows version number. This deployment approach is intended to reduce disruption when moving from 24H2 or 25H2 to 26H2. Actual upgrade times still need to be assessed on the organization’s devices.

Changes to test on business devices

According to Microsoft, 26H2 enables several experiences that were previously not enabled by default on commercial devices, including Windows settings backup, app-specific actions from the taskbar, and certain File Explorer improvements.

Businesses should include these changes in their user testing scenarios. For example, check whether they affect how employees open documents, access shared folders, and use their everyday applications. Windows settings backup should also be distinguished from backing up work data.

Four steps to prepare for the upgrade

Review the devices and applications currently in use

Create an inventory of Windows versions, device models, business applications, and peripherals for each user group. For engineering teams, also record the versions of CAD and CAM software, data management tools, and related licensing components. This inventory will help you select a representative set of test devices.

Test on a representative group of devices

Select standard office computers and devices running specialized software for separate assessments. Test scenarios should reflect real tasks, such as opening projects, saving files, printing documents, joining online meetings, and accessing data over the network. Record any issues along with the application versions to make troubleshooting easier.

Prepare data backups and a recovery plan

Back up important data and confirm that it can be restored before making changes to the operating system. IT teams should also prepare installation media, configuration details, and a way to restore the working environment if testing does not meet requirements. Backups must be stored somewhere the organization can access if a device fails.

Roll out the upgrade in user groups

Once testing meets requirements and a suitable version has been released, upgrade devices in monitored phases. Choose time slots that minimize disruption to work and notify users in advance. Expand the rollout only after essential applications are running reliably in the initial deployment group.

Keep the Windows 11 24H2 support lifecycle in mind

While preparing for 26H2, businesses still need to ensure that the version currently in use continues to receive updates. Microsoft has announced the following end-of-servicing dates for Windows 11 24H2.
