HANOI, Vietnam — August 29, 2023 — Vietbay, Siemens, companies in the semiconductor industry, government agencies and academia gathered September 28-29 in Hanoi to attend Vietnam Business Summit aims to highlight growth opportunities in Vietnam’s chip industry and across the Southeast Asian electronics ecosystem.
Linda Tan, President of SEMI Southeast Asia, said that despite challenges on the global stage, Vietnam’s economy has demonstrated outstanding resilience and adaptability in 2022, positioning the country as a leader. beacon of stability and growth. “Vietnam’s semiconductor industry is also on the rise, with an estimated compound annual growth rate of 6.12% from 2022 to 2027”.
Also in his speech at the Vietnam Business Summit, Minister of Planning and Investment Nguyen Chi Dung emphasized the key tasks set out in the draft Semiconductor Industry Development Strategy until 2030: accelerate Vietnam’s participation in the regional semiconductor ecosystem. At the same time, he also pointed out 5 factors that create a foundation for Vietnam to develop this field.
Vietnam has many opportunities to develop the semiconductor industry ecosystem
First: Vietnam has a stable political system and favorable geographical location. The Government and Prime Minister are very interested in promoting investment cooperation and developing the semiconductor industry in Vietnam.
Accordingly, the Government has assigned the Ministry of Planning and Investment, the Ministry of Information and Communications and other ministries to develop an action plan and strategy for developing the semiconductor industry in Vietnam. Vietnam is also building a human resources development project with the goal of forming a team of 50,000 engineers and experts for the semiconductor industry by 2030.
Second: Vietnam has an abundant workforce in the field of engineering and technology suitable for the semiconductor industry.
Vietnam also has reputable research and training units in the field of semiconductors such as Hanoi National University, Ho Chi Minh City National University, Hanoi University of Science and Technology as well as large enterprises with resources. and is ready to cooperate in developing semiconductors in industries such as Viettel, VNPT, FPT, CMC…
Third: Vietnam is attracting more and more large corporations in the semiconductor industry from the US, Korea or Taiwan… In particular, in early September 2023, US President Joe Biden visited Vietnam and brought issued a statement upgrading relations between the two countries at a comprehensive strategic level, as well as in the two countries’ joint statement, cooperation in innovation and development of the semiconductor industry is the most important.
Fourth: Vietnam has been creating many attractive investment incentive mechanisms for companies and corporations in the semiconductor industry. Accordingly, investment projects in the semiconductor industry in the high-tech field are given the highest incentives.
Fifth: Vietnam has established the National Innovation Center (NIC) and 3 high-tech parks in Ho Chi Minh City, Hoa Lac (Hanoi) and Da Nang, ready to welcome investors into the industry. Semiconductor with highly preferential mechanism. NIC and these high-tech parks will be an important bridge to support the development of Vietnam’s semiconductor industry ecosystem. The Vietnam Business Summit is an opportunity to connect and cooperate to promote the semiconductor industry in Vietnam and Southeast Asia.
Vietnam will become a semiconductor human resource center in the future
At the Vietnam Business Summit, the Ministry of Information and Communications said that, facing major changes in the world’s semiconductor industry, ASEAN countries and Vietnam need to quickly adapt to participate in the global supply chain.
Nguyen Thien Nghia, deputy head of the Bureau of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Industry, said that Vietnam’s ICT industry has grown impressively.
In 2022, the nation was ranked second for phone exports in the world, and became the sixth-largest computer part exporter.
Vietnam has some 300,000 engineers, 1.6 million workers and 42,000 companies active in the technological sector, Nghia said, adding that the nation is home to numerous firms specializing in designing, testing and assembling chips.
According to Mr. Nghia, by 2022 it is estimated to reach 148 billion USD, of which Vietnam ranks 2nd in phone exports, 6th in computer components exports and 6th in information technology outsourcing.
This proves that Vietnam is a valuable resource for the semiconductor industry.
